I have recently posted a paper on the Yahoo Calvert Group site that analyzes the DNA testing that has been done by descendants of a Calvert family that lived in Stafford and Prince William Co., Virginia. That paper may be accessed at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Calvert_Genealogy/files/AAA-DN...

The findings of the paper are

Preliminary observations based on the DNA tests taken by some Calvert descendants have verified documented relationships, linked unattached Calverts to our family, and led to suggestions for further research that is needed.

Our Calvert family appears in Stafford County, now Prince William Co., Virginia, at the end of the 17th century. Descendants of two brothers, George2 and John2, apparently sons of George Calvert1, have had their DNA tested. Based on these tests we have been able to determine the probable DYS values for 67 markers of George Calvert2, several of his sons and a grandsons, if we were able to test their DNA, which can be used as a reference to determine whether an individual is one of their descendants.

What We Know

Based on the test results I am fairly confident that we have learned what the haplotypes were for George Calvert2, Obed Calvert3 (George2), Reuben Calvert3 (George2), Rhodam Calvert4 (Obed3, George2), and Thomas Calvert4 (Reuben3, George2). We know this because the descendants of these men who have tested and have the same haplotype, thus their ancestors must have had the same haplotype. This establishes an ancestral signature and a modal value that allows us to compare test results to determine if there is a probability that a person taking the test is related to one of these men.

Unless a non-paternity event occurred in the line of the man descended from Burr Calvert alias Harris/Harrison, Burr was not the son of male Calvert related to George Calvert2.

Unless a non-paternity event occurred in the line of the man descended from Alexander Calvert5, his father was not a Calvert related to George Calvert2.

Gap Analysis

Of George Calvert’s2 six known sons, documented descendants of three of those sons George, Humphrey, and William have not tested, though based on the results of the testing it appears that one or more of these men’s descendants may have tested.

It appears only two of John Calvert’s2 descendants may have tested. Two descendants of his presumed son Jacob3. One tested only 12 markers and the other tested only 25 markers (the recommendation when the test was taken). This latter Calvert is a genetic distance of 4 at 25 markers from George Calvert2, Family Tree DNA says these means they are not related. No descendants of the one documented son of John Calvert2, George3, have tested to date.

There are 11 men who are not attached to the tree, yet, who appear to be very closely related. Of course, getting them attached to the tree helps us all.

Next Steps

• Upgrade the DNA tests of John Calvert’s2 two descendants to 37 markers
• Find a descendant of John4 and George Calvert4, the two documented sons of George Calvert3 (John2), to take a DNA test
• Attempt to attach the unattached Calverts/Colberts to our tree. Taking the information we do know, if we cannot find direct evidence, perhaps a circumstantial case can be constructed to suggest where they best fit on the tree.
• Compare the DNA test results of this family with the descendants of Lord Baltimore
• Compare the DNA test results of this family with the descendants of Christopher Calvert of Accomac Co., Virginia
• Find at least one more Calvert alias Harrison/Harris male descendant who will take a DNA test
