There is a B. B. Calkin buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Greenville, MI for whom I would like more information. I saw his tombstone earlier this week and want to share my findings regarding his family with any Calkin(s) researcher that might be interested.

His daughter, Ruth C, married Reuben Nash Sherwood Nov 6, 1859. Census records show Ruth with her parents in Michigan as of 1850. Burgess's wife's name was Lucinda (b c. 1810). Burgess per information on the stone died on April 8, 1868 at the age of 57 y. 11 m. and 8 d. making his DOB about April 30, 1810. Burgess had three daughters; Catherine (b c. 1835), Ruth (b July 3, 1837), and Julia (b c. 1839). The stone for "B B Calkin" is located with two daughters of "R N and R C Sherwood", both of whom died in childhood. The name on the stone for B B Calkin is not definitive, but I believe one of the B's stands for Burgess or Bergius (second spelling as in the 1850 census). The 1870 census has Burgess's wife living with Reuben and Ruth in Greenville. At that point Reuben and Ruth had a 9-month old son named Burgess (he also died before reaching adulthood). All of this taken together establishes that this tombstone is that of Ruth's father, Burgess Calkin.

Obviously my interest is in the Sherwood connection through the marriage of Ruth to Reuben N Sherwood. Reuben's history is unique in my family as he moved to California after 1880 and connections with the rest of my ancestors were lost as a result. Therefore, I am looking at his in-law families (there were two) for hints regarding his life. I would really like to share data with any Calkin(s) researcher that would be able to identify this Burgess Calkin.
Glenn A. Sherwood, Jr.
