While helping renovate a friend's circa 1880s home we discovered a large oak vat in the attic that once collected rain water and supplied it to the rest of the house though lead pipes. The vat has a brass plate indicating it was built by the Baltimore Coorperage Company. Handwritten on the outside of the staves is "Built by R.M. Cairnes, Catonsville MD. Plumber and Gasfitter, Bloomsbury Avenue." I found a Robert M. Cairnes in the 1920 census of Catonsville living with his family at 109 Ingleside. He was a plumber, so was most likely the man who installed the vat about 1908. The vat will most likely be sold to an antiques dealer, but I've got photos that I'll send to anyone who is intersted.
