The name was originally Bordajeau. Colas Bordajeau, his wife, Francoise and his children Pierre and Jean (later Peter and John) along with some daughters, immigrated to South Carolina. They were French Hugeunots fleeing religious persecution. They were part of the French Hugeunot settlement "New Bordeaux" in what is present day McCormick Co., SC. The names became Americanized and resulted in the various spellings seen today.
