Harold Brooks, 88, of Natrona Heights,
passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, in the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 26, 1924, in Sagamore,
the son of the late George Thomas and Elizabeth Andrews Brooks. Harold was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Marine Corps. Harold was one of seven brothers who served in the Armed Forces, four in World War II. He served with MacArthur troops in the British Solomon Islands Campaign, the Gilbert Islands, Mindara and Mindinaro and the Philippine Islands. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. His brother, George Edward, was killed in the battle for Okinawa; brother, William, served in the Leyte Campaign; and David served with Eisenhower in France and Germany. Harold worked for PPG in Creighton and retired in 1987 as a brick layer helper from Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Brackenridge. He was a member of the Allegheny Valley Baptist Church in Natrona Heights,Harold enjoyed raising perennial flowers, working crossword puzzles, camping, fishing, swimming, boating with his children and grandchildren on the upper Allegheny and on the Clarion River in the Allegheny National Forest Area and especially spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, Cheryl (Vic) Kamer, of Sarver, Edward (Linda) Brooks, of Saxonburg, and Sally Welling, of Natrona Heights; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Brooks, of Natrona Heights; sisters, Helen Treasure, of Florida, and Constance (Rodney) Fouse, of Ford City; and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Vogel Brooks; granddaughter, Melissa Sue Kamer; brothers, Thomas, George, William, David, Richard, James and Gerald Brooks; and by his sisters, Margaret Austin, Emily Louise Shihda and Gladys Muse. All of his family members were with him in the few days he was in hospice care. He was in comfort and peace and knew we were there until the end of his life. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the CICHOLSKI-ZIDEK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1522 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights, where funeral ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. Ronald Burkett. Burial will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights.
