My great great grandfather was a William Bragg whose census returns say that he was born in 1798 in Tipperary, Ireland (British Subject). I have his death certificate (1875 in Marske, Yorkshire, England) but it gives no other useful info. Would love to find his parents and am interested to know if he was of Irish stock or if he was only born in Ireland because his mother was there at the time! eg Army family.
As he was called William I expect he was Protestant (The Irish having long memories and William of Orange not being a popular King amongst the Catholic majority ...) which might also point to an Army connection.
Also interested in any ideas as to why he's down as 'British Subject' as Ireland at this time was British so all citizens would be British subjects.
Any help gratefully received. (I'd actually like him to have Irish ancestry as he's the only person in my tree not to be English through and through!!)
