my grandmother was a blakeley (i am not sure of the spelling) i believe her given names were MARRY ELLEN, she married OSCAR EUGENE CLARK, probably in NY state in the late 1800s
the following narrative may be of some use:
I am just beginning to research my history and I will relate the info that I have (some may be inaccurate, or skewed, due to failed memories and the nature of hearsay (one thing that is fairly clear is the fact that this branch of the tree evidently has some NOMADIC qualities)(wander-lust)
If any of this following stuff rings a bell, let me know.
beginning with things I know working back in reverse chronological order, here goes: (it gets fuzzier as I go)
my name is:
EUGENE AUSTIN CLARK, born 10 March 1937 in Notikiwin, Alberta, Canada
AUSTIN ALONZO CLARK, was born 4 November 1890 in Arvilla N Dakota, he lived in a whole bunch of different places in the US, before migrating to Canada, where he homesteaded, and took out citizenship, he died 11 June 1985
my grand parents
OSCAR EUGENE CLARK was my fathers father
BLAKELEY (MARY ELLEN) (her given names I think) she was my fathers mother I am told she was one of the first white females born west of the Mississippi (though that doesn't seem to ring true due to the time frame, maybe it was her mother)
OSCAR was born about 18?? died about 1924. I believe born in New York state lived there until he moved to North Dakota where he took up a land claim of some kind (preemption - homestead - I don't know the correct term) on the Turtle River, where there is now some kind of state park (although Minnesota Oklahoma get mixed up in this pot pore for some reason)
siblings of AUSTIN ALONZO CLARK:
MARY (married a LE SUEUR I think)
ELLEN (the only one I ever met, she lived in UKIAH California, being married to someone with surname of HANDS (her mail address was 1118 West Stanley Street, Ukiah California) (she never had children so I guess that is why she corresponded with me my sibblings) (that was many many moons ago)
to the best of my knowledge all of them except my father stayed south of the 49th parallel
other SURNAMES which appear somewhere in my "hearsay" history include
LE SUEUR (dad had a nephew named Clarence Le Sueur, he lived in Montana at one time, working some in, law enforcement)
CLEMENS (Mark Twain was often referred to in my fathers stories as "some sort of a long cousin"
My father related stories from his childhood many times, over the years they changed, evidently a reflection of the aging process...
the way it adds up to me is that sometime back in "the olden days" my predecessors found that they couldn't get along with their neighbors in SCOTTLAND, so they moved to IRELAND, where history repeated itself, so they moved to NEW YORK STATE in AMERICA, where history repeated itself, so they moved again, and again and again, and again. - my father moved to CANADA, where he moved again, and again and again
where I have carried on that noble NOMADIC tradition
I prefer to be called gene, I now live in sunny downtown Hixon (pop. about 500), British Columbia, Canada, where @ the moment I am composing this masterpiece, it is raining
ps i believe marry ellen had a brother with given name of CRAWFORD
