I recently confirmed that my great grandparents, Joseph (Josef) and Katherine (Katarzyna) Basaman, arrived in the United States from Poland between 1891 and 1899, and settled in Elizabeth, NJ. They were members of St. Adalbert Parish. They had 10 children, two daughters did not survive infancy: Julia died at 1-year-old in 1902, Rose died at 6-months-old in 1906. in addition, there was a son named Peter who died at the age of 20 in 1928.
Their other children were:
Mary (possibly born September 7, 1899, but not 100% certain.),
Louis (born March 22, 1903 – my grandfather)
Beatrice (Betty Ann) (birth date unknown),
Petronella (Bobbie) (born July 21, 1907),
Bruno (birth date unknown),
Chester or Charles (born April 19, 1915),
Josephine (born October 3, 1920).
In addition, there is some evidence to suggest that my great-grandfather’s brother and his wife also settled in Elizabeth for a while during the 1890s, but their names are unknown. It is also unknown if Basaman was the original family name; many believed it may have been changed at Ellis Island.
I'm interested in finding living relatives and I'm also trying to trace the family back to Poland. I would love to know where they came from and if we still have family there.
