BARCLIFT DNA Project opportunity

An opportunity exists for BARCLIFT descendants to participate in DNA analysis of the BARCLIFT genealogy. We already have a project set up with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), who has over 750 surname projects underway, in connection with the DNA laboratories at the University of Arizona, who have done some of the pioneering work on DNA for anthropology and genealogy. The test is a simple cheek swab, the laboratory does the analysis based on a Kit number to retain anonymity, and the results are back in about a month. The DNA test results are a string of numbers which represent the number of times specific areas of the DNA are repeated, and they are unique for each family line. The specific test areas are not in the genes, and do not convey any medical or other sensitive information. The test results are only useful for genealogists, and provide value when compared with the test results from others. If an exact (or close) match is found, then the two testers share a common ancestor; if there is not a close match, the two testers aren’t related within a “genealogy” timeframe.

The current project was set up for the BARTLETT surname, and it provides discounted pricing for 12, 25 (recommended) or 37 marker Y-chromosome tests. The Y-DNA is only passed from father to son, so only male descendants of a family line can be tested. Females have been instrumental in recruiting their brothers, fathers, uncles and male cousins. This project is open to BARCLIFT, BARTLEY, BARKLEY, BERKLEY and other names which have been used interchangeably in the past. We already have 5 BARTLEYs and some BERKLEYs are signing up. Results so far can be viewed at
You do not need to be descended from or related to any Bartletts to take advantage of this project. Just get several BARCLIFT lines tested and compare the results. Also FTDNA will compare your results with over 17,000 other tests, and several other web sites have databases of results from other laboratories which can be compared.

DNA is an exciting new genealogy tool – you are welcome to take advantage of an existing project and jump in. Of course we would very much like to see some BARCLIFTs who may, or may not, descend from the NC BARTLETTs participate in DNA testing which would resolve this longstanding theory. We currently have 4 BARTLETT lines tested which have paper trails leading to Perquimans Co, NC; we’d sure like to be able to compare these results with some BARCLIFT lines from this area.
