My wife is descended from Marcuis & Eunice Balcom through their oldest daughter, Eunice Maria, who married James Strivens in about 1830. Marcuis & Eunice had six children that I know of, Eunice Maria (b.1811), Charles (b.1812), Samuel Austin (b.1818), Horace (b. 1821), Mary A. (b.1825) and Sherman (b.1829). Mary A. married Nathan Hodge and they had at least 7 children. For a while in the 1840s & 50s they lived near Marcuis & Eunice, Horace, & Samuel south of Avon, NY (just a few miles from my home).
James Strivens & Eunice Maria Balcom had at least 8 children:
Eunice (b.c.1831), Anna M(?)(b. 1834), Salino (1836), Sarah (1838), Silas Leander (1839 or 41), Sherman (1843), Eliza A.(1845), and Knight (or Lucius N. b. 1847). They also raised two grandchildren, Ralph (b.1854) and Emily (1857). These last two are listed with the last name of Sharp in the 1855 census, and as grandchildren. Later censuses use Strivens and label them as children of James & Eunice.
Silas Leander was killed in the Civil War, but his name got passed on to a son of Sherman. Sherman (my wife's gggrandfather) changed the family name to Strivings in the 1880s.
I've noticed one or another of the Strivens living with or near the Avon Balcoms; also a Gaines Stanhope (Stanlope?) living with Sam. Austin Balcom in 1850.
I have not been able to track either the Balcoms or Strivens to the next generation back (before Marcuis or James). I have wondered if perhaps the Sherman Balcom recorded on line as son of Azariah (Mansfield, Tolland Co., CT, Sherman b. 1805) might be related somehow. I notice he had a sister Maria; but the other childrens' names don't match up.
I'd loe to hear more on these lines.
