I am wondering what country of origin your Baikie surname has? Has the surname been shortened from a longer name? I am researching the surname Baikauskas which was originally spelled Bajkowski in the 1500s and before in Poland......Bajka, Bialystok, Poland, to be exact. At that point these people who were nobles or assigned noble status at that time by the now combined monarchies of Poland and Lithuania, moved into eastern Lithuania near the Latvian and Belarussian borders and largely concentrated in the area of Rokiskis, Lithuania. They did spread out into other areas as well, and then began emigrating to the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My husband's family came to Chicago in the early 1900s from Lithuania. There were other Baikauskas/Baikowski families in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and later Maryland and New York that I am now aware of in the US. Does any of this sound at all related to your surname? Documentation at the time of immigration would have listed the country of origin as Poland--Russia; Russia--Lithuania; or either Russia alone, or Poland alone, or even Lithuania alone.

Please let me know what you think of what I have disclosed in relation to your own family.
