Robert Baehler was born 5-30-1863 in Mattwil, Bern Switzerland, the son of Christian VII and Magdalena (Trachsel) Baehler.

He emigrated in 1879 to Paris, France, then in 1884 to Roanoke, Woodford Co. IL USA. On 3-25-1888 he married Mechtild (Mathilda) Waibel in Fairbury, Livingston Co. IL.

To Robert and Mathilda were born six children:

2. Marie (Mary, Midge) Bahler

Died 9-3-1961 Galveston, Cass Co. IN

5. Matilda (Tilly, Tada) Bahler

6. Harry Bahler
Born 7-3-1908 Wolcott, White Co. IN
Married 6-2-1936 Frankfort, Clinton Co. IN to Iola Hagenbaugh
Died 5-2-1975 Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co. IN

During his life, Robert was a hotel employee, farmer, and feed and grain dealer. It is recalled that he spoke several foreign languages. Robert died 12-4-1936 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co. IN, and is interred in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, Gilboa Twp., Benton Co. IN.

Note: In the late 1880s following his marriage, Robert changed the spelling of the family name from Baehler to Bahler by dropping the first "e" (in his native country, this would have been achieved by using an umlaut over the "a"). In 1903, Robert moved his family to Indiana. Two of Robert's sons were active in politics. Son William served as a county recorder and city mayor, while son Harry served four terms as a Jasper County IN commissioner from 1954 to 1970. In 1962 Harry was president of the Indiana County Commissioners Association.
