Hi Cheryl

I have used the e-mail address direct which I hope will work.

Many thanks for your e-mail which was really informative. The Averns listed at 75 Oakley Street are my direct line of family. There was a James living there in 1817 which is when I have the Sun fire record for that house. His son George Adolphus was also a cork cutter in later years and had a brother James Josiah. There are two sons of George who continued the cork cutting trade namely Edmund M and Henry. I believe it was this Henry who started the Company in Silves.

The Averns are later listed at 12 Tracey Street Lambeth and are still involved in the cork business in the early 1900's

I have found a letter from Avern & Sons (Cork Merchants) in the East Kent archives dated 1882 which came from the archives of Margate Brewery. I have scanned this in to my Computer at home and will gladly forward this to you if you are interested. It is evidently the letter informing their customers of the partnership of Avern Sons and Barris. However, I belive that the Arthur Barris referred to is in fact Arturo Barris who was one of Henry's associates in Portugal.

Did you know there is also a cork museum in Palafrugell Spain. there is a reference to Palafrugell in the letter.

I would be thrilled to see any picures you have of the Silves factory. My address is as follows.
23 Worthington Close,

I will contact the magazine and see if I can get a copy of the Jan issue to read your article.

Many thanks for your info
