Dennis W. Aulenbacher, 73,
of Columbia,
died Feb. 10, 2012.
He was born Aug. 8, 1938 in Washington, Mo.,
the son of the late Emerson and Corona (nee Mittler) Aulenbacher. Mr. Aulenbacher is survived by Carolyn Wright and her children Scott Wright, Dr. Grant Wright and Dr. Karen Wright. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Aulenbacher; and a son, Derek Aulenbacher. Mr. Aulenbacher graduated from Illinois State University with a Master’s Degree in Instrumental music and physics. Early in his career he worked as a recording engineer at Universal Recording Studio in Chicago and at Techisonic Studios and Maritz Inc. in St. Louis. During his years as a mixing engineer, he recorded many performing groups including the Beatles, Stan Kenton, Count Basie and the Chad Mitchell Trio. Later on as a freelance engineer, Dennis worked as an audio engineer in the remote truck at Busch Memorial Stadium. He was also employed as a television engineer at KPLR, KDNL and KETC, all in St. Louis. Since 1990, Mr. Aulenbacher was an independent contractor in computer hardware and software, providing consultant services and computer support. In his last years, he taught a class in recording technology at Southwestern Illinois College. Dennis was an accomplished woodwind musician who performed with several local groups, including the Ambassadors of Swing, Second Generation Swing, Looking Glass Playhouse, Lindenwood University and Southwestern Illinois College. Mr. Aulenbacher enjoyed stock car racing, boating on the Missouri River, bicycling and photography. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 24, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral will immediately follow with Pastor R. J. Morgan. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Missouri, the Humane Society of Monroe County or National Wildlife Federation.
