Joseph "Joe" Daniel Atsye Jr., 42, a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, died unexpectedly, Saturday, August 9, 2003, at his home after a long illness. He was the youngest child and son of Joseph D. Sr., and Agnes R. Atsye. Joe is survived by his three children, Charles, Heather, and Jessica Atsye all of Laguna; mother Agnes R. Atsye; sister Thelma J. Atsye; brothers Gerald "Danny" Atsye and wife Ina, Everett Atsye and wife Lee; nephew Leenkun Baca; nieces, Ashley, Kelly and Alex Atsye; maternal grandmother Esther L. Martin all of Albuquerque; and a large extended family near and far. Joe is preceded in death by his father Joseph D. Atsye Sr. in March 2003; grandparents Charles and Alice Atsye and grandfather Joseph P. Martin. Mr. Atsye was born November 11, 1960 in Barstow, CA., where he attended elementary and intermediate schools. He was an active participant in Eastside Little League, Cub and Boy Scouts. Upon his move to Albuquerque in 1973, he went to Madison Middle School and Sandia High School, graduating in 1978. He attended UNM and TVI, where he received a certificate of completion in air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. He was employed for many years by Sears, serving the rural areas between Santa Fe and Taos. He was active in Altamont Senior League Baseball, also participating on Native American Indian hardball, softball, and mush ball teams, often playing side by side with his brothers and father. He was an avid bowler for many seasons, active in Albuquerque Native Bowling Leagues and tournaments. Joe loved the outdoors, enjoying gardening, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and skiing. Mr. Atsye was an enrolled tribal member of the Pueblo of Laguna, NM., and the Laguna Colony of Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held All Nations Assembly of God Church, 1119 Menaul Blvd. NW, on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 11:00am. Rev. William Fragua presiding, fellowship will follow.
