I am looking for the parents & ancestry of my ggg-grandfather Martin ANTHONY. In addition, I would like to get in contact with other Martin ANTHONY descendants who may also be working on this line. At least 3 of Martin's sons died while serving in the Civil War, including my gg-grandfather. I would also like to find out whether anyone has any photos or letters from this family, as we have been able to find nothing. Regards, Karen

Martin ANTHONY - b.abt 1788 in North Carolina
md. 31 Aug 1817 Franklin Co. GA to Elizabeth CHANDLER (reportedly b.abt 1800 Franklin Co. GA, daughter of James CHANDLER & Elizabeth STOVALL).

By the 1850 Census, Martin & Elizabeth ANTHONY & their children were in Jackson Co. Georgia. By the 1860 Census, they and several of their youngest children were in Fayette Co. Alabama.

This is an incomplete listing of their children, as there were probably several more older children whose names I do not have:

* John C. ANTHONY - b.abt 1830 Georgia

* Martin C. ANTHONY - b.abt 1832 Georgia; d. 10 Sep 1862
Lookup from Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865: "Claimed Residence in Jackson County - Enlist Date 13 May 1862 - Enlist Rank Priv - Served Georgia E Co. 34th Inf Reg. GA died disease on 10 September 1862"

* Minerva S. ANTHONY - b.abt 1835 Georgia

VA) "while in the discharge of his duty" 3 May 1863:

* Joseph B. ANTHONY - b.abt 1839 Georgia; d. 18/19 Jul 1862 Richmond VA
md. Nancy Harrison BARNETT 16 Dec 1858 in Jackson Co. GA. 2 sons: Alvin Mathis Griffen ANTHONY (b. 20 Jun 1860 Fayette Co. AL; d. 22 Aug 1939 Waukegan, Lake Co. IL) & James Beauregard ANTHONY. Joseph, Nancy & infant Alvin are recorded with Martin & Elizabeth ANTHONY family in Fayette Co. AL in 1860 Census. Joseph B. ANTHONY enlisted as a pvt in O'Neal's 26th Alabama Infantry Co.A. Admitted to #18 Greaner's Hospital in Richmond VA on 7 Jul 1862 with typhoid where he died nearly 2 wks later (from information compiled by Van Divers' survivors). From ADAH Civil War Service Database: "Claim filed by Nancy H. Anthony, widow, September 26, '63."
Joseph B. ANTHONY is buried in grave CN127 in the Confederate section of Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond VA (from Index to the Register of Confederate Soldiers Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond VA, compiled by Michael Litterst 1992). Widow Nancy never remarried but returned to Jackson Co. GA to raise her sons. Nancy later lived with son Alvin, his wife Annie Stovall PACE & their 12 children in Jackson Co. GA until Nancy's death there on 13 Nov 1912. Joseph & Nancy are my great-great grandparents thru their son Alvin ANTHONY.

* Cynthia C. ANTHONY - b.abt 1842 Georgia

I have no more information on Asa G. ANTHONY. He probably married & had children, and may have eventually died in Mississippi.
