It is very interesting that there are other Brogs in California, Idaho, and Wyoming! They are also dairy farmers! Are you aware that there were Brog dairy farmers in New York state?

My family came from Jeffersonville, in Sullivan County in New York state. Clarence Brog was my grandfather. The family were members of the German Presbyterian church in Jeffersonville.

The cemetery in Jeffersonville has several Brog's from 1800's onward. There is a marker for Melchior Brog - (1814; died 12/6/1885 - age 71 years) and Margaret Schild Brog (born in Meiringen, Switzerland, wife of Melchior Brog; 12/24/1814; died 10/8/1888 - age 74 years).

At any rate, we do not know if or how we are related to these earlier Brog's. My great-grandfather was Johannes Brog (1835 - 1888), who emigrated about 1858 from Innertkirchen, Switzerland. (Actually family house is in Wiler, Sonnseile, about 1.5 miles from Innertkirchen.) We speculate he must have corresponded with someone from Kanton Bern who traveled to NY state in advance.

We were told there are five Brog families near Innertkirchen when we visited in 1995. We were later put in touch with the correct family. The town hall has extensive records, but they are in Old German, handwritten, and hard to read. With help, we found (and copied) the records for Johannes Brog. His parents were Melchior Brog (? - 1844) who married Magdalena Fuhrer, with children Katharina(1825), Melchior (1828), Magdalena (1832), Johannes (1835) and Heinrich (1840). Magdalena Fuhrer's parents were Heinrich Fuhrer and Magdalena Schleppi. We were later sent part of a deed for land of Johannes Brog (born about 1770), who was Melchior Brog's father and our Johannes Brog's grandfather.

Also, Johannes Brog married Margaret Kohler (1847 - 1912) in Jeffersonville NY. He bought farm land from her father, Casper Kohler, in Jeffersonville NY. We just learned that Casper Kohler (1819-12/8/1883) and his brothers Nicholas and Henry all came from Zurich Switzerland. His wife was Lucia (Lucy) Rouff/Ruef (born 1829 in Switzerland - 3/30/1890). Immediately next to Jeffersonville NY is a village called Kohlertown, that has a lumber mill run by Kohlers.

Also, when I checked the census records for NY state (1880 and 1900), our Brog family is listed as Brooks! (So an outsider might not know it was they, except all the children's names and ages correspond perfectly.)

Also, for Callicoon NY (near Jeffersonville), we found for 1880: Andrew Brog 28 (Switz), wife Susan 24 (Penn.), Andrew Jr. (5), Estella (2), John (11 mos) and Priscilla Stout (mother in law, Penn). We found Michael Brog (66), Margaret (66), Michael Jr (38) and John (32), all from Switzerland.

In the 1860 census for Callicoon, we found: Melchior Brog (46), Harriet (46), Melchior (18), John (12), and Andrew (8), all from Switzerland. They are the same in 1880 except Melchior becomes Michael and probably Margaret was misunderstood as Harriet, not that the father remarried. It seems logical that they are the Melchior Brog and Margaret Schild Brog, buried in Jeffersonville Cemetery.

For 1860 census, we also found Casper Von Weisenfluh (49, farmer from Switzerland), Anna (50), Casper (17), Magdalena (13), Catherine (9), and Sebastian Brog (46, farm laborer from Switzerland). We do not know if we are related to any of these folks. However, perhaps they were all neighbors and advised on what the new land looked like.

We have a great deal of information going forward. We would be pleased to share it!
