The name Alderete is Spanish in origin. The earliest of my ancestors whom I can trace is a Don Rodrigo de Alderete who was the chief judge of Vizcaya who died in 1527 in Tordesillas. He is buried in the Alderete chapel with his son Don Pedro Gonzalez de Alderete, who held the order of Santiago. Don Pedro's grandson, Jeronimo de Alderete, went to Chile with Valdivia, and became 2nd Governor of Chile. Other relatives went to Argentina and other parts of central and South America. There are other, as yet, unlinked, Alderete families in Spanish history, all across the northern regions which were not conquered by the Muslims. We are trying to find the ultimate origins of these families, but at the moment, we can say, Spanish.
