William John AHRENDT b. May 1863 Berlin, Germany m. 12 June 1902 in Colorado a widow with two children, Mary Ellen ROSE b. 1880 England.. At the time of their marriage she was Mrs. Mary Ellen (Rose) Mansheim. Mary Ellen Rose was the daughter of Charles Rose and Cathrine (unknown). William John Ahrendt was born in 1863 on a ship or steamer while his parents were emigrating to the US. He lists in census his place of birth as ‘New York.’

In 1900 William John Ahrendt was 37, single, working as a miner and one of only two lodgers boarding in the household of a mechanical engineer named Morse in Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. He married later in life than most, at age 39. Mary Ellen (Rose) Mansheim’s first husband had been an engineer, so perhaps an introduction was through the head of household who was also an engineer. We know from oral family history that when Mary Ellen (Rose) Mansheim’s husband was murdered, his mother Bertha Mansheim and her son August Mansheim came from Washington Township, Ft. Madison County, Iowa, collected the two children (her grandchildren) who were ages 5 and 1, and took them back to the family farm in Iowa until Mary Ellen (Rose) Mansheim could become stabilized and get back on her feet. Mary Ellen (Rose) Mansheim remarried nine months after her first husband’s murder when she was 22 and William John Ahrendt was 39, so there was a 17-year age difference between them.

The two Mansheim children were returned to Colorado and lived with their mother and new husband in Leadville. In the 1910 census William and Mary L. Rose are living in Pct 20, Chaffee Co. Colorado. Mary indicates this is a 2nd marriage for her and that they have had 7 children, but only 6 are living by 1910. Her two children by her previous marriage are with them.William appears to list ‘blast furnace’ as occupation. He is 47 but she is 29. William John Ahrendt died in Red Wood, CA. In the 1920 census they are living in Salida, Chaffee Co. CO and William John Ahrendt now 59 states he is from Berlin, Germany. He is working as a foreman for the Iron Works and now 15 yr old John is also working, as a laborer at the Iron Works. Mary Ahrendt states her ‘year of immigration’ to the U.S. was 1895 from England and that she was naturalized in 1896.Mary Ahrendt states her father was born in England, her mother in Scotland.

Mary Ellen (Rose) first married on 17 Feb 1896 in Leadville, Lake County, CO, John Joseph MANSHEIM b. 27 Nov 1868 in Washington Twp, Fort Madison, IA. d. 10 Sept 1901. John Joseph Mansheim was an engineer who on 10 Sept 1901 was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was in a saloon in Leadville helping his friend Grand Deptar, the owner, close up for the night. He was murdered at age 32. John Joseph Mansheim is buried in St. Josephs Catholic Cemetery in Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. John Joseph Mansheim was the son of Clemence Mansheim b. 1829 Prussia and his 2nd wife Bertha Pennartz who were living in Washington Twp, Ft. Madison, Iowa farming at the time of the murder. Clemence Mansheim’s obituary read: Obituary of Clemence B. Mansheim

Clemence Mansheim of Washington, Twp., who died Dec. 10, 1889 and was born Oct. 16th, 1829 near Munster, Prussia. At the age of 10 he immigrated with his parents, two brothers and a sister to this country and landed Dec., 1842 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to meet one brother and two sisters. In Jan. 1843, the united family started for Ft. Madison, Iowa territory, but on account of heavy ice in the river they had to remain in St. Louis for 2 months, when in March of the same year they landed at this place. For several weeks after their arrival here they dwelt in a house situated where the Metropolitan hotel now stands, when his father bought a farm from John Minton, in Washington twp., which Clemance inherited and which has been his home up to his death. His brother died 1854, three years later, in 1857, death again visited his family and took away his consumptive brother, Wm. He lived with his aged father until Jan. 1858, when he married Miss Maria Dierker, of West Point township, who died 1864, and left him and 3 sons, Wm. aged 5 years, Henry, 3 years, and John 10 months to mourn her. These 3 sons are now living in Dakota. William arrived on Dec. 10th to visit his dying father, but too late, he had already expired. Mr. Clemance Mansheim again marriedin Oct. 1865 to Miss Bertha Pennartz, of West Point twp. Ten children were the fruits of his second marriage, of which Hubert, the oldest son, died 5 years again at the age of 18, of brain fever. Four years after his second marriage his father died of old age, he being 81 years old.Thirteen monts ago his daughter, Sophie, died of dipheria, age 6 years; she is awaiting her father`s coming in heaven.

The story of Mary Ellen Rose Mansheim’s first marriage is a fascinating one. One posting said she married a 3rd time to an (unknown) Fields, and that she was buried in St Josephs Cem, Leadville, Lake Co. CO
