Okay, I hate to look like an idiot, but I don't understand. Is Ackerson and Eckerson the same family name, where different branches of the family just used one or the other? One family of my ancestors went between Sexton and Saxton, and I do understand that did occur. I have an Ackerson who married a Sexton (listed as 'Saxon' in the marriage records for Bergen County) in my family tree. It's possible that I also have an Eckerson somewhat related (married to the sister of my GG grandmother). So I'm thinking that perhaps the two men were cousins? The marriages took place within a 5-year time span.
More than one of my branches was Dutch; they centered in or around Bergen County. So which name came to America first, Ackerson or Eckerson? Does anyone know when the name started going between the two versions? I just need a place to start (beyond looking in New York as well as New Jersey)my search; any pointers is appreciated.
