Hallo Julie,
The Roots of Della Spina are from Italy.
If you look on internet and ask for Della Spina, you get a lot of advertising but also some information about the family Della Spina.
My research (no proof yet): Della Spina were the 'Etruske tribe' near the city or Rome (Italy). Then they were taken over bij the Romans. By the way, there used to be a harbour called Della Spina, on the coast near Rome. Then about 1200-1275 a family or perhaps several families (wool traders) went to Belgium. The name Della Spina changed into L'épiné and Vandooren. The most of della Spina were chased away ca. 1325 and went to Holland. The name Della Spina perhaps vanished in Belgium. So its sure quite possible that your grandmother came from Sicily.
However the blond hair and blue eyes dont match wth the roots because possible the Etrusken came from Little Asia ( The Libiers tribe). Those Libiers tribe split because of poorness and no food, and went to Italy. But that happened perhaps 2000 or 3000 years ago.
It would be nice if uou can find out and tell me your roots starting with your grandmother. It might help me with my puzzle. There's a lot of work to do.
Greetings for now.
