The unit known as the 303rd ordinance regiment (or John Deere Battalion) was organized in 1942. My father joined 23 Sept. 1942 recieving a commission as 2nd LT. It consisted of 400 men 35 of which were officers. The enlisted men trained in NC and were deployed from Camp Shanks, NY 2 Nov. 1943 and arrived at Warminster, England 13 Nov. They then were sent to Belgium to repair tanks which had John Deere engines in them. I have posted a picture of approx 1300 damaged tanks waiting thier skilled hands. I am not sure how long they were there, but dad was discharged 4 Feb. 1946. Hope this helps.
