I'm working on the family tree of the Dutch family Meertens (the one in “Nederlands patriciaat”). Anthony Meertens (1753 Middelburg Netherlands-1815 Clifton England) was governor of the Dutch colony Essequebo en Demerary until he surrendered to the English in 1803. The last name Meertens is originally a patronym (son of Maarten or Martin). “van” between first and last name usually means from.. (e.g. a town). Anthony Meertens was also the owner of two plantations in Demerary (Dutch) and the owner of a thousand + slaves. The slaves had a first name, followed by “van” (property of) “name plantation owner”. I don’t recognise any of the names mentioned.
