Nilsson Family of Torekov / Rebbelberga, Sweden

Posted: 1285035090000
Classification: Query
Surnames: Nilsson, Nelson, Karlsson, Pålsson, Persdotter
With the help of keen genealogists (Judy B , Martin L, Barbara M), we have discoved a new branch to our family tree.

Grand father: Carl Newton Nilsson b.26 Feb 1886

The family name is Nilsson. They come from Torekov.(c1900) and before that Rebbellberga (c1880)

We are keen to find out his ancestors and what became of his siblings.

Below is a copy of some data from the Swedish census of 1880, 1890 and 1900.

Included in the document is the most current tracking of Carl Newton Nilsson - he shows up in the USA (1903, 1918) and we know he must have been in Sweden in 1929 / 1930, at least, before returning to the US.

Kind Regards

Neal & Karin Lohse

########AUG 2010

I hope you may be able to help us solve a family mystery. Or perhaps point us in the right direction.

We recently became aware of an ancestor who left Sweden and lived in the USA (Califorinia) We are partiuarly interested in his life and any decendents in the US. He gave his address as:

Carl Newton Nilsson.

Box 376

Redwood City, CA USA

He was my Grandfather, my father’s biological dad.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Turns out my father was put up for adoption in Sweden in 1930.

On the adoption papers Carl Nilsson stated the above address as his residence. He also had property in Sweden. So, he clearly had “means” to travel and visit family in Sweden.

The only trace we have found of him in US records is him arriving at Ellis Island NYC enroute to San Francisco in 1903 @ 17yrs of age.

We wondered if going local to the Redwood City archives might shed some light on him. At the time of stating his address as Redwood City, the population -- from my research -- would only have been 5000 – 6000 people. (c1930).

We would appreciate of any information you may be able to share with us.

What we know of him is:

Carl Newton Nilsson b. Feb 28, 1886 in Vastra Karap, Bastad, Sweden.

He gave the town of Torekov (or Torekow) as his “home”.

He and his brother Axel Wilhelm Nilsson (b. 1884) left Sweden in 1903.

Carl, sailing on the SS Norge, arrived in the US on May 6th, 1903 at NY. His stated destination was San Francisco and an address of what looks like (hard to read) Mr Nelson c/- Sausalito, Marin Co. CA.

He was back in Sweden during 1929 and 1930. He gave the address of Box 376 RedwoodCity CA to the Adoption agency in Helsingborg Sweden in February 1930. My father was born in April of that year. His name was Sven Erik Martensson after his mother’s surname).

Carl Nilsson denied paternity and the Swedish court system issued a writ to appear to contest the fatherhood. He evaded being served until May 1931, when the free trial was set for 26 Novemer 1931.

########SEPT 2010

Discovered this.

A search of his name on Ancestry shows he registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918.

He listed his name as Carl Newton Nelson.

His address was 428 Birch Street, Redwood City, San Mateo, California.

His next of kin was Vera Nelson at the same address.

He states he was born in Sweden on February 28, 1886.

He was a hotel clerk at the American Hotel (employer's name was Joseph Costell? - the last name is written over) in Belmont, San Mateo County, California.
