Hi Kay,

Thanks for your message. James Charles Thwaites was my Great grandfather. He was born in Shetland but raised in Sunderland. His father seems to have disappeared from the scene very quickly.

The Tyne and Wear Archives at Blandford House, Newcastle, holds a record 'Marine School of South Shields Navigation Department, vol 1'. This shows James Charles attended the Marine School, although it gets his name wrong. He is listed as entry no 1330 - John Charles Thwaite born Lerwick 21/11/1854.

I have a copy of a Sunderland Echo article written about James Charles when he died in 1936.

According to the article, at the age of 23 he served as second officer on the Charlwood. Later, he served on the Collingrove ( a clipper which served the route to Australia).

At some point, he took from the Wear the yngaren, the first motorised vessel every to be built at Pallion.

During WW1 he was a Trinity and Admiralty pilot at Dover and Dungeness.

His first wife was Isabella Thompson Olley, who had many children, including my grandad, Stanley Thompson Olley Thwaites.

Hope this is useful.

Best wishes,
Lynne
