Helping my friend Alan Johnson with his family research:
Between old family records and records I could find in Michigan:
Charles (Karl) Gustaf Johte
b. Sept 17, 1855 - most records in Michigan say he was born in Finland. One record says Sweden.
d. 25 June 1927 in Detroit, Michigan.
Married March 25, 1880 to
Maria Karvonen, daughter of Isaac Karvonen (per her death record)
b. Dec. 30, 1854 or Jan. 1, 1855 Most records say Finland.
d. 22 Sept 1928 in Allouez, Keweenaw county, Near Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan. Buried in Lakeview cemetery, Calumet, Michigan.
Emigrated about 1881 - from Pajala? Sweden maybe?
Census records, and other records MOSTLY say they are from Finland.
The family story says they were born in Pajala, Sweden, a town on the border of Sweden and Finland.
Four children, I think all born in Michigan, except maybe the oldest son:
1. Charles Johte
b. 8 Nov 1883, Some records say Finland
d. May 6, 1924 Michigan
2. Mary Maji Johte
b. Nov. 12, 1885, Deleware Mine, Keweenaw county, Michigan
d. Jan. 13, 1959, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan
3. Amanda Johte born in Upper peninsula of Michigan.
4. Alma Johte married Olaf Johnson
b. 1887 or 1888 in Michigan
d. Nov. 15, 1970, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
I don't know how Finland's records work, or what they have online, but I hope someone can help us.
