James Whiteford and Jean Wyl(l)ie emigrated from Scotland on the Garland to Melbourne in 1852. They came with their children, Mary Reid Whiteford and George Whiteford.

Jean was born in Stewarton Ayrshire Scotland in September 1821. James was born in Ireland and christened in Campbeltown Argyll in May 1826. Margaret was born in 1850 and George in 1851 or perhaps 1852.

James's parents were Alexander Whiteford and Margaret Kain/Cain, both I believe from Ireland. They were born in the late 1700s. They had one other child that I know of, Catherine, who remained in Campbeltown and married Donald Galbreath/Galbraith in 1847. Both Catherine and Donald died in 1890 in Campbeltown.

Jean's parents were Thomas Wyl(l)ie and Jean Morton. Thomas was a farmer associated with Caddel Farm in Ayrshire. Jean's grandfather was George Morton associated with Skellyhill perhaps in Darvall.

In Australia, James and Jean initially lived in Richmond, before settling at Gardiner's Ck, later Malvern. They bought land at the corner of Glenferrie and Wattle Sts which was sold during the 1900s. Their children born in Australia were Louisa Isabella, born 1853, James Wylie Whiteford born 1854, Thomas 1857, Margaret 1860 and Jane Mary Catherine born 1863.

Margaret married John Beattie in 1891 and died in Hawthorn in 1939. Their children were:
Maurice Melville bn 1891, John Lyle bn 1893, d BRIG 1968, Linda Myrtle bn 1893, Ivo Pearl
bn 1897, Clive Roy Hopetoun bn 1901, Hugh Vere Moyes bn 1906, Mervyn Whiteford bn 1906.
All were born in Malvern. There may have also been a James Clarence Beattie and a Ruby
May Jane Beattie who died respectively at ARMA in 1975 and MALV in 1975.

Thomas bn Campbeltown Sco in 1852, married Minnie Mary MACAULAY in 1895
with Minnie Macaulay WHITEFORD bn 1896 in Malvern. Thomas died in 1896. There may be newspaper articles about his death. He stepped through elevator doors into the elevator shaft and fell several stories.

Louisa Isabella Halcrow Prussia (that's what's on the Digger CD!) m James DUNN. She died in Dandenong in 1930. Her children incl Jno Archd (John Archibald??) bn 1891 and Annie Ella bn 1893. They were both born in
Malvern. I believe other children of this marriage were Louisa who married a CRIBB and died in BTON in 1941. Daisy Lilian Jane who married a REILLY and died in ARM in 1931. Thomas Butler who died in Malvern in 1939,
William Francis who died in GLEN in 1958, James Morton who died in KEW in 1963 and Elizabeth Margaret (BARNES) died in 1974 in BEEC.

Jane Mary Catherine (or possibly Mary Jane according to Digger on her death cert) born Gard 1863, married Paul SMITH Malvern 1893, died Lilydale 1936. I have no details of children.

I would be very pleased to hear from anybody with an interest in any of the families.

Thanks all

A Whiteford
