Hi Leanne,
I need a bit of a miracle here. We have found no records of Phillip Edward Stanlake before this electoral roll entry of 1924.
He claimed to be a 'solicitor' in this enrolment information but he never worked as a solicitor that we know of (in Australia at least). I am hoping to narrow down the timing of his appearance in Australia (using this name) and see if there is any correspondance with the relevant legal office in Melbourne, i.e. assuming that he was trying to get himself registered as a solicitor.
Regarding his name - it is almost certain that he assumed this name for a new life in Australia. We know what he did from his marriage in Adelaide in 1925 until his death in Western Australia in 1963.
Some things we believe about his early life include: -
1)Born about 1879 in England
2)Served in the Boer War and WW1 in an English regiment
3)Did not have any relatives who contacted him from 1925 onwards
He was well spoken, quite educated and a 'military' man. He never returned to England; he made up details about his early life that changed (e.g. details in his WW2 records of service in the Australian army are inconsistant, his marriage certificate record is different again).
