I have found several references in Trove that relate to him. Any references to William Newlands tailor from around 1840 to 1869 will be about him but he was also a publican at various times during this period so there is also references to William Newlands publican .
What I can tell you about him:
• He arrived in Sydney 03-12-1837 on the "Portland" as a bounty immigrant.
• He was a tailor by trade and his immigration papers are marked " although not quite 18 I consider him well entitled to receive bounty". The bounty paid was £10 which would normally only be paid for persons over 18years old.
• He married Catherine Newlands (Golden) on the 02-01-1843 in the Scots Church Sydney.
• He had the five children I have already mentioned previously to Catherine Golden before her death on the 20-02-1854. Note there does not appear to be a record of her death in NSW BDM but there are death notices in Sydney publications at the time see below link for the one in the Sydney Morning Herald but there is at least two others I have found.
• On the 22-02-1854 he married Jane Alexander and had a further 8 children to her. Jane Agnes (1855-1929), Fredrick James (1858-1858), Theresa Elizabeth (1860-1940), "Unnamed Male" (1862-1862), Alice Alexander (1863-1956), Lily (1866-1959), Emma (1867-1959), Ada Florence (1869-1968). Fredrick James died at age of six weeks and the unnamed boy died at age five weeks. Ada Florence was born after his death.
• He became the publican of the "Glasgow Arms" Hotel on the 24-01-1849 but became insolvent on the 08-01-1850 and returned to being a tailor.
• He again became a publican this time at the "Rose of Australia" in 1855.
• In April 1858 he again became the publican of the "Glasgow Arms" and again became insolvent on the 18-06-1859.
• He died in Toowoomba on 20-07-1869 and is buried in Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery. You can view his grave online by going to and typing in the name Newlands. Scroll down till you find his name and click on his name. As a point of interest all persons with name Newlands buried in the Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery are descendants of William.

You can find in Trove several articles and notices relating to when he was a publican, there is also articles or notices in relation to the death of Fredrick James & the "Unnamed Male", the marriage of Ann Christina, and the death of Catherine. I have taken screen shots of most of the articles I have found.

I only have a couple of photo's of Robert George but are happy to share Newlands family photo's. If you can give me some contact information I will arrange to send. (Private message)

I would add that I have been researching the Newlands family since the arrival of William in Australia and would be interested in collaborating on any information you may have if you are interested.

Have a Merry Christmas also.
