Retire (R. W.) Frees (1828-1895) - Civil War correspondence?

This is a total shot in the dark, but I found the below article in the 27 Jan 1885 Daily Northwestern about my third great-grandfather from Utica/Oshkosh hoping to publish some reminscences from his time in the Civil War. Does anyone have any clue as to where such a manuscript, or the correspondence/journal mentioned in the article, if they still survive, might be found?

"Capt. R. W. Frees has, during his leisure time for the last year, been engaged in preparing for the press his recollections of the incidents of the war. The Captain served from the first call of the volunteers to the close of the war. From the early defense of the capital to the finish of Sherman's march to the sea. In the preparation of his work he has reference to a daily journal kept for over four years, and to a mass of correspondence consisting of over 200 letters written from the army to his family at home."
