Johannes Becker born 1-12-1816 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany emigrated to New York in August of 1842 to settle in Wisconsin. He meet and married Katherine Kastler about 1843, she was born in 1821 and the daughter of Nicolas & Eva (Casper) Kastler. To this union eleven children where born, John jr. bn. 1844, Mary bn. 1848, Charles bn. 1850, Anna Katherine bn. January 1852, Nicholaus bn. December 1852, Margartha bn. 1856, George bn. 1858, Julia bn. 1860, Henry bn. 1862, Philip bn. 1864, and Stephen bn. 1869. In the winter of 1869 they lost six children to the epidemics: John age 25, and Charles age 19, died of thypoid fever in September and October. Anna, Margaretha, Julia, and Philip died of diphtheria and scarlet fever in January. All the children except the first two, John and Mary, were enrolled in the church records at St. Anthony's parish, which was at that time in Fussville.
Johannes and Katherine spent their later years in the home of their son Nicholas in Menomonee Falls. Katherine died 4-19-1899 and is buried in St. Anthony's cemetery, Johannes died 1-10-1904 and is buried beside his wife.
Johannes was acquainted with many Milwaukee pioneers, including Soloman Juneau. Johannes was hired by Juneau to build a small log cabin. Asked by Juneau to state his price after the cabin was completed, he settled for a gun.
