Thore Stein (Steien)
Thore Stein (Steien) was born to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Erickson Stein Oct. 11, 1841, in Lille Elvedalen, Norway.
On April 8, 1868, he married Miss Ingeborg Stadsbuoien. A few days later the young couple started for America, making the trip across the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, which took twelve weeks for the journey. They landed at Quebec, coming directly from there to Pierce County and settling on the land in Spring Lake township which has since been their home.
Seven children were born to them - six daughters and one son - of whom only a daughter, Mrs. C. W. Mattson of Minneapolis, survives.
Mrs. Stein died in 1923.
In spite of his advanced age, Mr. Stein remained in fairly good health until May 10, when he broke his hip by a fall on the floor of his room. He failed quite rapidly and it became apparent that his days were numbered. He prayed that he might soon be released, and Tuesday, June 5, death came at the age of nearly 93.
Funeral was held from the home and the Spring Lake Lutheran church Thursday, June 7, Rev. Berven officiating. Burial was made in the Spring Lake cemetery.
As long as he was able he worked diligently and faithfully for his loved ones, who one after the other were taken away until only a daughter, Mrs. C. W. Mattson, remained. Besides her, he is survived by twelve grandchildren, also many more distant relatives.
