Ole A. Kaasen
Ole A. Kaasen was born to Mr. and Mrs. Avle Kaasen, Aug. 28, 1853 in Alvdal, Norway. On Oct. 15, 1877 he was married to Marit Einund.
The following year they came to America settling on a farm in Spring Lake where the young couple built a home and where they have lived since. Mr. Kaasen revisited Norway in 1929.
Six children were born to them - three sons and three daughters - of whom the following survive: Marie (Mrs. Wm. Johnson) of Twisp, WA., and Albert, Herbert and Hilda at home. Edward died in infancy and Anna, (Mrs. Gust Dahl) of Seattle, WA passed away in 1918.
Besides his children, he is survived by six grand-children and three great grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in 1937.
Mr. Kaasen was the last survivor of a family of five brothers and one sister. His twin brother, Joe, a former resident of Minneapolis, preceded him in death over fifty years ago., and his last surviving brother Simon, of Everett, WA, passed away in Oct. 1948 at the age of 90 years.
Mr. Kaasen has been in declining health for a number of years, but he has been able to be up and to walk about some with the help of two canes.
About three weeks ago he became ill, and it soon became apparent that he could not regain his strength. He slept away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 7 at the age of 95 years, 5 months and 10 days.
The funeral was held from the Geving Funeral Home and the Spring Lake Lutheran Church Thursday afternoon, Feb. 10, Rev. Berven officiating. Burial was made in the Spring Lake Cemetery.
Mr. Kaasen's death marks the passing of one of the oldest, if not the oldest resident of the Town of Spring Lake. Although he reached the exceptional age of more than 95 years, and his long work day was spent, he will be sadly missed not only by his children, but by his neighbors and large circle of friends. It was a real treat to visit him as he was a very well read person and blessed with a keen, analytical mind and a wonderful memory.
