Mrs. Karen Johnson was born to Peter and Mary Hanson December 6, 1851 in Lille Elvedalen, Norway. At age 16 she came with her parents to America, settling in the town of Spring Lake.
April 7, 1876 she married Andrew Johnson. The young couple at once began house keeping on the groom's farm in Spring Lake which has since been their home. Ten children were born to them, all of whom, with the exception of one who died in infancy were living: They are Joe of Elmwood, Milton at home, Ida (Mrs. Adolph Anderson) of Spring Valley, Charley and Iver of Minneapolis, Henry at home, Marie (Mrs. Gust Nelson) of Spring Valley and Fred of Chicago.
She died February 11, 1932. Funeral was held from the home and the new Spring Lake Lutheran Church being the first service held there.
She was survived by nine children, 12 grandchildren and three brothers, H. P. Hanson of Spring Valley, John of Elmwood, and Ole of Rock Elm. An only sister, Mrs. Mead Bailey died in 1928.
