If you google Sisters of the Good Shepherd you will find many links. My aunt who grew up in Milwaukee was a member of the order and wrote the biography of the Mother Foundress in the late 1940s. I was told by one of the Sisters that they did not take in girls who were pregnant. They worked with girls who the courts thought needed help. They were no longer able to take such girls because the girls were not convicted of anything so could leave when they wanted to. It seems to me that long ago maybe the 1930s or 1940s in some places they took in teenage girls who did not have family. The Sisters now help battered women etc. The Milwaukee House closed in maybe the 1980s when there were not enough Sisters to work there. I will try to help out if you have any questions. I can be emailed at maryquirkt at yahoo dot com.
