Julia “Gi Gwepkwe” Pyawasay

Julia W. “Gi Gwepkwe” Pyawasay, age 80, of Neopit passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at a local nursing home surrounded by family members.

Born on Aug. 20, 1929 in Neopit, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary Anne (Wesho) Thunder.

She enjoyed being a Senior Companion for the Great Lakes Tribal Council and when able, playing bingo and visiting the casino. She will be remembered for the delicious food she cooked for family and friends.

Julia married Robert L. Pyawasay, Jr. on March 12, 1966 at Menominee, Mich. He preceded her in death on April 3, 1999. She is a member of the Big Drum.

Survivors include: three daughters: Roberta (Patrick) Tourtillott of Neopit, Julie (Scott) Palmer of Coral Springs, Fla., Robin (Charles) Hull of Wichita, Kan., a son, Melvin (Jane) Preston of Oak Harbor, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Cheryl, Ryan, Cameron, Daniel, Justin, Justine, Georgia, Robert and Carleigh and several great grandchildren.

She is further survived by four sisters: Ramona (Melvin) Zimmerman of Janesville, Christina Lawe of Neopit, Joanne Linares of Davenport, Iowa, and Rosanna Wynos of Milwaukee; and a brother, Donald Wynos of Milwaukee.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Darryl Preston; five brothers: Henry Thunder, Wayne Wynos, Sr., Louis “Sabu” Wynos II, Robert Thunder, Dewey Thunder, Sr. and two sisters; Virginia Liendo and Florence Tobias.

Services will be held at the Zoar Ceremonial Building with burial at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 with Mr. Billy Daniels officiating.

Friends may call at the Zoar Ceremonial Building, Zoar, after 12 noon on Sunday until the time of the burial on Tuesday.

The Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
