Hi Donna,

I entered your Herbert Ohren into my research databases and found him as a child in Edwardsville, IL (Madison County). The newspaper there published numerous items about his visits in the 1920s from Missouri to visit his parents in Edwardsville (and theirs to see him). There's no mention of Herbert having a wife up to 1930. By 1936 the newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin (where Herbert was then working) was already reporting the birth of a child to Herbert and wife Ellen. Unless he was married to two Ellens, it seems that she was the same woman who was later his widow. Is it your thought, Donna, that Herbert was married to (and lost) another woman sometime between 1930 and 1935, when Ellen was in the picture? Not impossible surely but I didn't find any reference to it.

The second daughter is identified in her birth announcement (in Madison) as Donna Rae. You'll find that reference is the research run-down I've copied below. Obviously, just toss those things here that you already knew. I had fun looking him up ~:-) (Hopefully I was following the right man!).

Research database print-out follows:

1910 census -- Edwardsville, Madison Co., IL:

OHREN, William J. -- head, age 41, b. IL, dad German, mom English, proprietor/refreshment stand
Grace M. == wife, age 36, b. IL, parents b. Germany; married 15 yrs.; has borne 2 kids
William J. -- son, age 14, b. IL
Herbert J. -- son, age 11 mos., b. IL

1920 census -- (same Madison Co., IL location as above):

OHREN, Wiliam, age 50, b. IL; mom's birthplace changed to unknown; laborer/roads
Grace -- age 46, mom's birthplace changed to US
Herbert -- age 10, b. IL

Herbert J. Ohren -- b. May 30, 1909; SS issued WI; died Jan. 26, 1995; last residence: Florence, Lane Co., ORE

Herbert's entry adds to the above SSDI facts that his widow's name was Ellen.
