From Wikipedia
Natural Bridge is a geological formation in Rockbridge County, Virginia, comprising a 215-foot-high (66 m) natural arch with a span of 90 feet (27 m). It is situated within a gorge carved from the surrounding mountainous limestone terrain by Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the James River. Consisting of horizontal limestone strata, Natural Bridge is the remains of the roof of a cave or tunnel through which the Cedar Creek once flowed.

There are many "forks of the James River" in Botetourt and Rockbridge Co. one which was prominent in Rockbridge Co. enters the James across from Sidney Vale, --land owned by Jos. Gilmore--which followed the river around a curve across from Gilmore's Mill and crossing the border into Botetourt Co.

There are old maps available at U ov VA --which has great resources for geneolgists, including land grants, law suits, et al.

I have lots of old maps, but not as available as they used to be on my website. ancestry.com made changes to the free web sites, and not everything was included in the updates.
