Surnames: Cousins
Here's where we left off...
Nathan Cousins and Mattie Evans (the parents of Rosa and Eleanor Cousins) were married June 3, 1903, in Nottoway County, VA
Nathan was born around 1873, Nottoway County, son of Nathan Cousins and Rebecca _?___
Martha (Mattie) Evans was born 1876 in Nottoway County, the daughter of Simon Evans and Rosa _?____

Here is some information on Nathan Cousins and his family...
1900 Census, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan M. Cousins, age 22, with parents Nathan Cousins (b. May 1835) and Rebecca Cousins (b. Jan 1836) , Lizzie Doswell, (b. Mar 1828) widow, born in Alabama, listed as the mother-in-law of the elder Nathan Cousins. (Hmmm....I doubt that Lizzie gave birth to Rebecca when Lizzie was 7 years old....something isn't quite right here!)

Here they are again on the 1880 census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan M. Cousins, age 9, with parents Nathan Cousins (45 - b 1835) and Rebecca Cousins (age 40) and Nathan's siblings, Elexander, Nancy, Patty and Virginia Cousins.

1870 Census, Haytokah, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan Cousins (age 40) and Rebecca Cousins, with their oldest children: Griffin (1857), Eleck (aka Elexander), b. 1859, Ann, b 1861, Harriet, b. 1863 and Ellen, b. 1869

And, regarding Mattie (Martha) Evans Cousins, here is her family on the 1880 Census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Simon Evans, age 45, wife Rose Evans, age 40, Children Adolphus, 15, Mary A., age 9, Martha A, age 5, James E., age 1, and unnamed infant male, 25 days old.

1870 Census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Simon Evans, age 55 ?? (should be 35) wife Rose, age 30; children Archer (11), Adolphus.
Also at same address is Branch Evans, age 30 (possibly a brother of Simon?), Ann Evans, age 20, and Finnela Evans, age 2.

The next most likely question is this: were your Cousins and Evans ancestors born as slaves or free? I'm not sure. There are two free black Simon Evans on the 1860 census - one in Prince George County and one in Prince Edward County, but neither seems to be the right age.
As for Cousins, there is a free black man named Nathan Cousins living in Nottoway County on the 1850 census, age 16 (b 1834) which makes him about the right age to match the Nathan Cousins, father of Nathan, on the 1880 Nottoway County Census. He is working on the farm of Garland Wingow (Wingo) in Nottoway County. The problem is, I can't find this Nathan Cousins on the 1860 census. He could possibly have fled north to avoid the pending civil war.
Garland Wingo of Nottoway County was born 1776 and died 2 Jan 1856 in Nottoway County, VA. It might be interesting to try to obtain a copy of his Will and Estate records, to see if there is any mention of his slaves or any mention of Nathan Cousins. Or to review court records in Nottoway county to see if there is a record of Garland Wingo having freed any slaves prior to 1850.

Something else interesting. There are two Cousins families in Nottoway County on the 1840 census headed by free black men - Charles Cousins and John Cousins. Both have sons about the right age to be Nathan, but I really don't know.

Something else really interesting. There was a series of newspaper advertisements in the Richmond papers between 1830 and 1831 concerning a man who was committed to the Jail of Nottoway County "on the 14th day of November, 1830, as a runaway, a negro man, who calls himself Peyton Cousins, and who also says that he was born free and raised in the County of Charlotte. He is about thirty years old....." The article goes on to request that anyone knowing Peyton Cousins and able to provide evidence that he is free, should contact the writer of the article. I have no idea whether this Peyton Cousins is or is not your patriarchal ancestor. It would take much more research to prove or disprove.
