Re: Spout Spring - Cavalry outpost during the Civil War?

During the Civil War, my Gr Gr grandfather's youngest brother was a member of Co B, 8th Virginia Cavalry when captured by Union forces under Brig. Gen. John B. McIntosh during the action at Abram's Creek, Berryville Pike - Sept. 13, 1864.

I have been trying to pinpoint the location of the dismounted VA cavalrymen who were overrun and captured; some of the old narratives seem to indicate that Daniel Wood's house, "Spout Spring" may have been the base location of the Virginia cavalry during this engagement.

Gen. McIntosh's report of this action (published in the Official Records of the War of the Union and Confederate Armies - Vol 43, Part I, pages 529-530 : report no. 158) describes the capture of the cavalry pickets when his regiments "overtook some of their dismounted men, who had secreted themselves in a thick skirt of woods".

Does anybody have any information which describes the use of Daniel Wood's house by the military in August and early September, 1864?

Thanx.
