Some of the details of the following newspaper article may be inaccurate. A Mary McLaughlin of this age does not seem to be in the 1870 census of Rutland. I wonder if the article is about Mary Burke McLaughlin, wife of Michael, who died in 1872 at age 85 and is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery

December 29, 1871.

An Interesting Old Lady.

Mrs. Mary McLaughlin lives on Green street, Rutland. She is a smart old lady, ninety four years of age. Notwithstanding her extreme old age, she does all, or nearly all, of her housework: can knit and sew, threads the finest needle without the aid of glasses, and can dance with all the ease and fire of a young Irish lass, if we may judge from the exhibition of her powers, as reported to us, at the recent wedding of one of her grandchildren. She also constantly attends church, walking in fair weather the entire distance from her house to the church.

Her maiden name was Mary Rourke, being of the Mayo county (Ireland) family of Rourkes, somewhat famous in Irish history. She was in Ireland during the rebellion of 1798, and frequently entertains her children and others, with reminiscences and anecdotes of that thrilling and romantic episode in Irish history. She has lived to see herself the first of five generations, the youngest and fifth of the line being an infant of days, and has fifty-three descendants living, namely, seven children (two sons and five daughters), thirty-two grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
