I wanted to share this obituary. Stuart assisted his wife, Anne Kendall Smith, in compiling the vital statistics from the St. Johnsbury Caledonian from 1807 through 1917. Their work has been a godsend for all of us with ancestors in Caledonia County.
"Stuart E. Smith of Walden died Sept 15, 2013, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 80.
Stuart was born in Toronto, Ontario, June 7, 1933, the son of Arthur and Edris (Stone) Smith. He received a B. S. degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and three M. S. degrees from the University of Ohio and University of Washington State. His latest job was as an engineer with the State of New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation at Albany. He also worked for the Dept. of Environmental Conservation in Columbia, S.C., and taught at Hudson Valley Community college in Troy, N.Y.
In 1957 Stuart married Catherine Ferne Allen in Montreal, Quebec. He is survived by their three children, Eileen Fogerty of Nassau, N.Y., Elizabeth Smith, of Saratoga, N.Y., and Douglas Smith of California; two grandchildren, Jason Fogerty, of the US Army, and Joanne Fogerty, of Albany, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren and one step- great grandson.
He also leaves his wife Anne Kendall Smith; a brother Garth Smith of Cornelia Georgia; two sisters: Lynette Doolan and Edris Gillet both of Hartland, Wisconsin. He was predeceased by a brother, Warren Smith, and Catherine Ferne Smith.
Stuart loved his nearly twenty years in Walden, and was always busy with many activities. He often told people that he had never lived at any other place for more than seven years.
There will be no funeral service. Burial will be private by the family in East Dorset Cemetery in East Dorset, Vt., at a later date." (published in the Caledonian Record, 17 Dec 2013)
