I am writing to you hoping that someone can help me.

I am a descendent of Johann R Itten and his second marriage to Madeline Justet. They were married in St. Thomas, Nevada about 1869.

John was one of the original Swiss Company members that came to Santa Clara, arriving in November of 1861. He at that time was married to Magdelana Schneider. (They were married on 16 Oct 1861 in the Endowment House prior to leaving for Santa Clara with the Swiss Company. Christian Moosman and Maria Justet were married the same day.) In about 1864 John, while living in Santa Clara, recieved an inheritance of band instruments which he donated to George Staheli and a Swiss band was formed. I find in the marriage records that Magdalena marries a second time to Harrison Pearce as a polygamous wife on 3 Oct 1863. This date is also found in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers book "Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude" pp 2324. She and Harrison had 5 children. If this is the case, what happened to her marriage to John Itten?? The article states that John died, but I believe that he instead moved on to St. Thomas as a single man in company with Christian Moosmann and his wife Maria.

My research shows that John Itten went to St. Thomas in January of 1865 at the same time as Christian and Maria Moosman. There John met and married Madeline Justet after she came in Oct 1868. Madeline Justet and Maria Justet Moosman are sisters. John is listed as single on the St.Thomas Ward records when he came to St. Thomas and is listed as John Itten. In all of my research, I find Christian Moosman and John Itten always together. Also on the St. Thomas ward records John Itten and Madeline Justet Itten are listed as the parents of a son John Itten born and blessed on 27 November 1870.

My problem is this.....what happened to the mariage of John and Magdalena Schneider Itten? Did they divorce? Did he die as the person who wrote the history of Magdalena Schneider Itten Pearce says he did? If so, who is the John Itten that goes to St. Thomas with Christian Moosman?

It is very important for me to determine what really happened to the John R Itten who married Magdalena Schneider and who had also received the inheritance of band insrtuments.....did he just leave Magdalena? If he died, then my research needs to start over. In our records, it was assumed that Magdelena died.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Carol
