John Akin Kirpatrick brought his family to Deaf Smith Co., Tx by covered wagon from Memphis, Texas in 1900. He was a farmer and later owned a grocery store, "The Famous", with a partner, Bill Stone, in Hereford, Texas in 1906. He sold out in 1908 and moved to Rock Island (now Glenrio), New Mexico. He died at Canyon, Texas in 1917 and his wife died there in 1943.
Walter William Kirkpatrick, Canyon is the only son of John Akin Kirkpatrick now living. A daughter, Mary Lous Krizan died in 1935 and a son, Avis Akin in 1949.
Grandchildren are Wade Krizan, Lubbock; Mrs. Lawrence Taylor, Michigan; Mrs. Arnita Dew, Short Beach, Conn.; Mrs. Marjorie Jones, Big Springs; and Jim A. Kirkpatrick, Hollis, Oklahoma."
'Grandfather John Kirkpatrick came from Ireland with two (three?) brothers and settled in Indianapolis, Indiana. He walk to Texas. He went to work for a fellow killing buffalos for their hides. They would hide at the water-holes and kill the animals as they came to drink. They would kill as many as possible, skin them and stake the hides to the ground to dry in the sun. Then a wagon would pick up the hides and they would walk on to the next water hole. They traveled through all of the trading points along the way, including Dodge City, Kansas.
He settled in Montague County, Texas. He spent some time in the Texas Rangers. He stayed in the Rangers only until the glamour wore off and he discovered it was mostly hard work!
After leaving Montague County, he settle in Wilbarger County at a site about a mile from Doan's store which was 14 (fourteen) miles north of Vernon. He was hired by the store owner because the owner needed someone who wouldn't rob him blind while caring for his store.
John Akin Kirkpatrick was born October 28, 1853 in Indiana and he died December 17, 1917 in Canyon, Texas.
He married Cora Avis Miller who was born March 9, 1871 in Pontiac, Illinos and died June 10, 1943 in Canyon, Texas.
I was hoping for more family members and more history especially about the Texas Rangers as this was the stories told to the grandchildren. I am not directed related, but my half-sister, LaJuanna Krizan Taylor Bustamente is related.
