Here is another tall tale about one of William Jesse Messer’s son’s. He is referred to as Jack, I am assuming it is John Messer:

Warren Debs Messer remembers that : " Uncle Jack left Scottsboro, AL through a court room window and caught a train just pulling out. He picked up the name Pecos Jack down around the Texas Border while he was working outside the law. The Texas Rangers caught up with him and gave him a choice, he could join the Rangers or be exterminated. He was a Texas Ranger and then a Law Marshall in Shamrock, TX plum till he died. Uncle Jack talked with a German accent, he was a woodsman. Any time you turned your head and then looked back you couldn't find him, it was like the earth swallowed him up. He knew where gold and silver was in the Cumberland Mountains and when he got in need he'd go up in the mountains for a spell. Uncle Jack and Grandpa Messer ( Jesse G.) went up and down the country telling the slaves they were free."
