My great grandfather was John Elam Gailey, who married Martha Thomas Dunnavant.
My Father, Eric G. Howell of Hartselle, Alabama,. always felt that his grandfather was murdered by Gen. Joseph Wheeler, rather than his brother-in-law, Thomas Jones. However, my grand-mother, Pauline Gailey Orr, John Elam's only remaining child was adopted by the Simeon and
Nettie Lieper Orr in 1892, She was evidently left with them for keeping when he left and went to Kaufman County, before the Trial. The best written record of the actual murder of Dandridge
