“Man killed in collision

KINGSTON - A 56-year-old Greenville man died Friday morning when his late-model sedan collided with a semi-trailer truck on U.S. Highway 69, five miles south of Celeste.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials identified the victim as Ray V. (Buddy) Shields, 56, of Route 3, Greenville.

Injured in the two-vehicle fatality was his mother, Edna V. Shields, 86, of Greenville, who was reported in serious condition with multiple injuries in Citizens General Hospital.

According to DPS spokesman, the accident that claimed ShieldsÂ’ life occurred at 8:45 a.m. Friday near this small Hunt County community.

The accident report indicated Shields was driving south on U.S. 69 at a slow speed on the shoulder lane, and was apparently allowing faster vehicles to pass his 1975 Ford Torino.

Shields, the DPS spokesman said, apparently attempted to make a left turn across the highway, when his car collided with a truck tractor driven by Daniel Lee Siverling of Pilot Point.

The ShieldsÂ’ car was reportedly dragged 700 feet south of the initial point of impact by SiverlingÂ’s truck. Shields was pinned behind his steering wheel.

Mrs. Shields, a passenger in the Torino, was taken to Citizens General Hospital by a Greenville Fire Department ambulance.

Shields was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital by Justice of the Peace Merrick “Mickey” Money.

Funeral services are pending at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.”
