Melvin Rudolph Riewe, 79, died Wednesday, May 5, after an extended illness.
Services were Friday, May 7, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Houston with Rev. Randy Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in Forest Park East Cemetery in Houston.
Mr. Riewe was born May 2, 1920, in Pottsville, the son of Edwin and Ella Riewe. He graduated from Pottsville High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a storekeeper and supplier on Okinawa, Japan.
He was stationed at the Navy Depot in San Pedro, Calif., when he met his wife, Marian Palozzola, and they were married June 30, 1946. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Pottsville, and farmed for a while before working at General Dynamics in Fort Worth. From 1958 until 1966 he worked for Schkade Brothers Drilling Co. in Abilene and moved to Houston in 1966 where he worked in cryogenics at NASA until his retirement in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Cora, who died in infancy, and a brother, Emanuel.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Wayne and wife Marian and Michael and wife Jeanette, all of Houston; a brother, Clarence and wife Mildred of League City; two sisters, Nora Schkade and husband Oscar of Abilene and Veleria Kopp and husband William of Freeport; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Clifford Riewe, Victor Riewe, David Riewe, Jerry Storey, Fred Ham and Tim McMurrough.
