Nancy Jane Bird, born about 1818 in Tennessee, was the oldest known child of Captain John Bird and Mrs. Sarah Denton Bird. Nancy came to Coahuila y Texas, Mexico in 1829 with her parents and siblings. They settled in Stephen F. Austin’s colony in present Austin County, Texas. Nancy Jane’s first marriage was on September 22, 1835, in present Austin County, to Edward Shipman. Her next marriage was to Alexander Blair, Jr. who was appointed the administrator of Captain John Bird’s estate after he was killed on May 26, 1839. Nancy’s third marriage was to Sherwood Ray on June 16, 1848 in Austin County, Texas. Her fourth marriage was on February 16, 1845, in Austin County to Daniel Peters. Nancy J, Peters married James W. Dexter on June 17, 1847, in Burleson County, Texas. Nancy Jane’s last known marriage was on March 16, 1855, in Burleson County to John Haley.
James Dexter and his wife Nancy, and his daughter Sarah Dexter, age 10, along with Eveline Allen, age 8, daughter of Nancy’s sister Wincey Bird Allen, and her husband William Allen, were enumerated on September 10, 1850, in Burleson County. J.W. and Nancy Dexter joined the Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Burleson County, in October 1852. J.W. Dexter died before 1853. John Haley joined the Dove Baptist Church in July 1855 along with Levina J. Haley. John and Nancy J. Haley with eight children were enumerated on August 12, 1860, in Burleson County. John Haley died in 1863 in Burleson County. Mrs. Nancy Haley was dismissed by letter in August 1865 along with the Allbrights, Birds and others from Dove Baptist Church to form a new church. Nancy Jane Bird Haley died in 1866 in Burleson County, Texas. Nancy Bird Haley, and other family members who died after 1865 probably are buried in the Allbright Cemetery in Burleson County, James Dexter, John Haley, and other family members may have been buried in the Allbright Cemetery, the Bird Cemetery, or the Providence Cemetery in Burleson County. Providence Cemetery was established in 1836 but when the Allbright and Bird Cemeteries were established is not known.
The names and number of children of Nancy Jane Bird and her six husbands are not recorded. The following are thought to be her children:
1.Pamela Jane Shipman, born about 1838 in Texas, Married John S. McMinn on June 3, 1857, and a daughter Ann E. McMinn born about 1859.
2.Elizabeth Blair was born about 1839 and died about 1864.
3.Sarah Jane Blair was born about 1840 and died before 1873.
4.Sarah Dexter was born about 1849.
5.Sabra Dexter was born October 1, 1850, in Burleson County, Texas. She married William M. Pettis on March 4, 1875, in Burleson County’ Sabra Dexter Pettis died January 26, 1901, and was buried in the Allbright Cemetery in Burleson County.
6.James K. Dexter was born about 1853 in Burleson County and died after 1873.
