SORRY FOR THE TYPO ERROR IN THE DATE IN EARLIER POSTING.
The Angelina County Genealogical Society will meet at 5 PM, Monday, April 21, 2014, at Kurth Memorial Library, 706 South Raguet, Lufkin, Texas.
The program will be presented by Lufkin native and long-time ACGS member Billie Pate Grunden of Jasper. Mrs. Grunden and her husband, Fred, who worked in Lufkin prior to his retirement, are frequent visitors to family and friends in the Lufkin area. Mrs. Grunden has previously presented programs to ACGS on her experiences researching various branches of her family tree. Mrs Grunden graduated from Lufkin High School and from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with a B. S. degree in Medical Technology. In their growing up years the Grunden children were very active in 4-H Club demonstration and speaking contests and their mother’s experience as their leader and coach is very evident in her speaking style.
Her program title is “Aunt Celia’s Jewelry.” “My program will be more about how I did it,” Mrs. Grunden said, “ which might not be how someone else would do it.” Mrs. Grunden researched her 4th great Aunt Celia King Grove. Her Aunt Celia lived in Madison Parish, Louisiana, during the Civil War. Federal troops, in particularly those under Union Generals Grant and Sherman, made her Aunt Celia’s house their headquarters before the battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Mrs. Grunden said that most of the whole town was burned and that she was extremely fortunate to find any surviving records with information about her family. Some of the family used the Grove without the “s” and some used Groves with the “s.”
The search is still on-going to locate and display portraits or photographs of all the past sheriffs of Angelina County, Texas, according to ACGS member Jim Bell. Mr. Bell’s ancestor, G. T. W. Collins, was the first sheriff of Angelina County.
Dues for the 2014 society year can still be paid at this meeting. ACGS dues are now $15.00 for individuals and $20.00 for two people at the same address.
